Maryam El-Awadi’s paintings and sculptures are inspired by the tension of being born and raised in the American South by parents who had to leave their Middle Eastern home countries for a safer life. The social issues that women of color grapple with such as misogyny, unconscious biases and xenophobia inspired El-Awadi to comment on them through her art. While addressing these issues, El-Awadi is illustrating the way our mental health and view of ourselves is affected by these factors.
El-Awadi exhibits her work nationally while also painting murals in collaboration with other artists where she currently lives in North Louisiana.
